Jan Cafearo – Bowen Technique at Women in Mind
The Bowen Technique is a holistic therapy, consisting of gentle rolling moves over precise points on the body, interspersed with periods of rest. Two to three treatments at weekly intervals may be enough to achieve relief from even long-lasting pain.
The technique was developed by Tom Bowen in Australia, and named after him following his death in the 1980s. It has since flourished and spread worldwide. Osteopaths, sports therapists and physiotherapists are among the many professional practitioners, who use Bowen.
Who can benefit from Bowen?
The treatment is very gentle – no force is used or needed. So it is suitable for all ages from new-born babies, to elderly people. It can help a person adapt to change in the body, as in pregnancy. It can help relieve symptoms of terminal illness, or complex chronic conditions. Or it can address specific aims, for example help sports people achieve optimum performance.
Problems that commonly respond well to Bowen include:

How is Bowen holistic
Bowen treats the whole body, seeking to restore balance, and promoting the body’s natural healing process. Although a person may attend with a shoulder or back pain, it is common for other, seemingly unrelated problems to resolve at the same time. By improving balance between the main postural muscle groups, Bowen often brings about a tremendous renewal of energy – as one patient put it – “I feel more like me than I have felt in years”.
Jan’s approach to Bowen Therapy
I worked in the NHS as a physiotherapist, where I got my greatest satisfaction working in the Out-Patient department, treating soft-tissue injuries and chronic orthopaedic conditions. After taking time out to raise my young family, I was looking for a more holistic treatment. I found it in the Bowen Technique, and was at first amazed, and then fascinated by the sheer effectiveness of the treatment.
I would like to see Bowen more widely prescribed as a first-line treatment in the NHS, because of it’s sheer effectiveness and lack of side effects. I believe everyone deserves to benefit from this very natural treatment.
What does a treatment involve?
A treatment will normally take 30-45 minutes. The patient lies on a treatment couch, wearing underwear or light clothing, and discreetly covered with towels. If necessary, they can be treated sitting in a chair.
Using thumbs and fingers, the therapist performs small rolling moves over precise points on the body. These moves instruct the body in how to balance itself. There is no manipulation or force used or needed. During the session there are periods in which the patient is left resting for some minutes, to allow the body to absorb the moves that have been made. This gives the body time to make the fine adjustments necessary to let go of tension, and start the healing process.
What is the cost?
First consultation - £35 - up to 90 minutes
Follow-up treatments - £30 - up to an hour
Extracts from Bowen Testimonials
Migraine
‘I have been so used to frequent migraines, I can’t quite mentally adjust to not having pain since the Bowen treatment.’
Back pain
‘The morning after the 3rd session, I bounced out of bed. I wasn’t in pain! It was amazing. I feel I’ve been given a new lease of life.’
Asthma
‘Bowen has changed my life. I no longer have to worry about asthma attacks with my daughter, or watch her fight to get her breath.’
Sports injury
I had been having problems with my back, groins and thighs for most of the season. I can’t explain how it worked but after a couple of treatments the problems virtually disappeared. I was able to touch my toes for the first time in ages, and was able to go the full duration of a game easily.
Neck and Shoulder injury
I had suffered from a stubborn and painful neck and shoulder injury for over 3 years. I was amazed at the results of just 3 Bowen treatments, how could so small and gentle a movement make such a difference?
